DM Tips: Your Setting is the Bedrock of Your Dungeons & Dragons Campaign
Sorry for the video issues! Tried to record a video using Wirecast and it came out a little... odd. Lesson learned!
I've been to talk about setting for a long time now. I'm not sure I got everything I wanted to say about it out there but this is a good start. Setting is the linchpin, the bedrock, the cornerstone of your RPG campaign. Defining it and communicating it accurately to yourself and your players is paramount.
Having a well-defined, concrete setting will crystalize your thinking about all your future campaign decisions and make all your subsequent decisions easier. If you're starting a campaign, write down your setting-- the broad points and the elevator pitch. If you're already in a campaign, try writing out a few bullet points about what your setting is, as guiding principles. Either way, if you haven't thought much about your setting, take care of it and it will take care of you!
