Do You Remember The Original Need For Speed? Retro Gaming Long Play Through - Sony Playstation 1996
Can you remember what the original Need For Speed was like?
I hadn't realised until I was looking for what retro game to play through next that the Need For Speed series will be 30 years old in December 2024. It originally came out for the Panasonic 3DO in 1994, which about three people bought, before coming out two years later on other formats such as the SEGA Saturn and Sony Playstation.
It's a million miles away from the Fast and Furious inspired modern N4S games, which I've lost interest in. The original series was a more traditional racer, inspired by Test Drive which many of the developers were previously involved with. It's worth noting that this game arrived on the scene prior to Gran Turismo ever redefining what we wanted from a driving game.
Here I play through the entire Tournament mode of the PlayStation version. All 6 playable tracks, followed by the hidden Lost Vegas track which opens once the Tournament mode is completed. This is a longplay video and I don't expect anyone to watch for a great deal of time, it's purely to allow you to experience the game for yourself as I play through it for the first time in many years. I've put chapter points in for you to jump through it.

As a lifelong gamer, motorsport fan and occasional karter my gaming history is heavily biased towards racing games. From Chequered Flag on the ZX Spectrum through every major home computer and console since I've played and still own most racing games you care to mention. This love of arcade, simcade and fully simulated racer led me all the way to winning a real world racing driver contract with Racing Prodigy and their incredible e2Real competition. They are on a mission to remove the barriers into motorsport and show that money and age should not stand in the way of the dreams of talented young....and old racers! I'm looking back at some of the games that were part of my journey leading to winning my pass at Prodigy Week via Street Kart Racing. If you want to see my story then check out this video • Racing Prodigy - How you can become a... and if you want to take advantage of the opportunity for yourself then head over to https://racingprodigy.com/ now or download Street Kart Racing on your local iOS App Store.
