One of our greatest dreams as humans is to explore the vastness of the universe. However, interstellar distances are so vast that the key to this dream is thought to be travel at the speed of light. One of the most striking questions that comes to mind when we consider this topic is: Does a person traveling at the speed of light stop aging?

The answer to this question lies in Albert Einstein's Theory of Special Relativity, and it confronts us with a surprising conclusion: Theoretically, yes, as we approach the speed of light, a person's perception of time and biological aging come to a halt.

Relativity and Time Dilation
Einstein's theory states that space and time are not absolute, but rather change according to the motion of the observer. This phenomenon is called Time Dilation.

The Relationship between Speed and Time: The faster an object moves, the slower time passes for that object. At everyday speeds, this effect is negligible. However, as the speed approaches the speed of light (≈300,000 km/s), this slowdown becomes more pronounced.

Approaching the Speed of Light: Imagine traveling in a spacecraft at 99.9% of the speed of light. Time would pass much slower for the crew inside the craft than for those remaining on Earth. Their hearts would beat slower, their metabolism would slow, and biological processes (i.e., aging) would slow down.

Stopping at the Speed of Light: If a human could travel at exactly the speed of light (which is impossible according to the laws of physics because they have mass), time would come to a complete standstill in their frame of reference. This means that for that person, there would be no heartbeat, no breathing, no cell division. Looking back, they would not have aged at all.

The Twin Paradox and Biological Reality
The most well-known thought experiment regarding time dilation is the Twin Paradox. One twin remains on Earth, while the other embarks on a space journey at near the speed of light and returns.

Consequence: The twin returning from a space trip will be much younger than the twin on Earth. For example, if they spent 10 years in space, thousands of years could have passed on Earth.

Aging: Because time slows down for the traveling twin, their biological aging has also slowed. For that twin, only 10 years have actually passed. Aging doesn't stop, but it does slow down significantly.

Physical Obstacles: Why Can't We Stop It?
While it's theoretically possible to stop time, modern physics presents two major obstacles to this dream:

Mass and Energy: According to the formula E=mc
2, as the mass of an object increases, the energy required to accelerate it also increases. Accelerating any object with mass (including humans) to the speed of light requires an infinite amount of energy. Since there is no infinite source of energy in the universe, reaching the speed of light is impossible for massive objects. Only massless particles (like photons) can travel at the speed of light.

Infinite Mass: As the spe...
