I looked everywhere online for this answer, I could not find it.

So I took matters into my own hands and wallet for science!

Please enjoy and share this information with others, as I know other people have got to be asking the same question when looking to buy gear.



I could do a deep dive during the video about the results (data graphs) but the video was long enough I am sure for most peoples attention span.

So here is the MOST important data in detail:

The test where we turned on the fans, and would start to cool down like we are riding.

This test started AFTER letting the jackets sit in the sun for well over 30 minutes to get as hot as possible.

at 12:58 my time after sitting 30+ minutes no airflow in the sun.
Black Jacket 107F
Tan Jacket 103F
White Jacket 101F

As soon as we turned on the fan temps rapidly declined.

At 1:12 my time
Black Jacket 98F (from 107 a drop of 9 degrees)
Tan Jacket 97F (from 103 a drop of 6 degrees)
White Jacket 97F (from 101 a drop of 4 degrees)

We then turned off the fan to simulate being stuck at a red light.

At 1:17 my time
Black Jacket 99F (from 98 an increase of 1 degree)
Tan Jacket 98F (from 97 an increase of 1 degree)
White Jacket 98F (from 97 an increase of 1 degree)

So we can conclude that sitting for a short period of time they all go up really close in temp in this case 5 minutes they all went up 1 degree.

Over an extended amount of time, the darker colors will get hotter, but that is not a realisitc scenario while riding.

As soon as we start riding the tempature immedialy drops and even letting the darker colors heat up to an unrealistic worst case scneario they all quickly became neck and neck showing how the black jacket dropped more in temp than the tan, and the tan dropped more than the white.

This shows us the cooling power of a mesh jacket far outweighs the heat energy from the sun, so as long as you are moving they will all be about the same.

Furthermore in a real lilfe situation the darker color jackets will never even be able to climb to the higher tempatures that we tested here.

Back to our analogy of a black car being hotter than a white car (as mentioned online when I researched this question)

This is only if you let then both sit in the sun, closed, no cooling.

If we turned on the AC in the black car, but not the white car. Well then the black car would be cooler than the white one.

When someone used the cars as an analogy what they should have done was tested both cars with the AC maxed out, and then determined if the black car was hotter than the white car.

As long as the AC was powerfull enough to beat the heat, well both cars would be the same.

THAT is what we are testing here, how much cooling energy is there from a mesh jacket while riding, and how easily can it over power the heat energy from the solar radiation.

As we can see in this specific test, keeping as many variables controled as possible and carefully recording results.

Even a small amount of wind easily overpowered any difference in tempature between the jackets.

Summary: Don't sweat it! lol aka dont worry about the color unless you are constantly at a stand still in traffic. It takes a long time for the darker colors to get hotter, and a very short time for them to cool down to the same as the lighter colors.
