Does June Return In Avatar: The Last Airbender?

Some of the most beloved characters in the world of Avatar: The Last Airbender are side characters, like the fierce bounty hunter June. Neither the dangerous and beautiful June nor her fearsome pet, Nyla the shirshu, hold allegiance to any of the four nations of the Avatar: The Last Airbender world, and she is depicted as a mysterious anti-hero. Netflix's live-action adaptation of the award-winning Nickelodeon animated show provided a new platform for characters like June, played by Arden Cho, to shine.

Arden Cho's June and Nyla made a big entrance on Netflix's live action show that somewhat aligned with their first appearance in the animated show. However, June's role was changed later in the first season, and she was even given a one-on-one scene with Gordon Cormier's Aang. The expanded insight into June's character makes it fair to wonder if she'll reappear in Avatar: The Last Airbender season 2 if it happens, potentially with an even larger role than she ever had in the animated show.

In the animated version of Avatar: The Last Airbender, June debuted in the classic season 1 episode "Bato of the Water Tribe", after tracking a stowaway bounty onto Zuko's ship. Zuko and Iroh engaged her services to help find Aang and his friends using the scent from Katara's necklace, and she and Nyla battled against Appa and Team Avatar at the end of the episode. Nyla ran away after accidentally paralyzing Zuko and June with its venom-tipped tongue, and that was the last any of the primary characters saw of the dangerous pair until the very end of Book Three.

Team Avatar sought out June when Aang went missing on the eve of the appearance of Sozin's Comet, but she and Nyla were unable to help due to Aang's mysterious disappearance on the back of the giant lion turtle. They did, however, help the team track down Uncle Iroh and the other masters of the White Lotus as they were preparing to liberate Ba Sing Se. June's only two appearances in the original show saw her work both for and against Team Avatar, truly showcasing how little allegiance she had to anything other than money.

June's motivation lends itself to her not only returning to the live action show in the same fashion as she did in the animated show, but potentially expanding her role. As a bounty hunter, June is only loyal to money, meaning that she can align with individuals on either side of the ongoing war. While the live action show has already seen her work for Zuko and Iroh to hunt and capture the Avatar, she could be hired by someone even more dangerous. Seeing June's fearless character play off the intimidating Azula, for example, would be highly entertaining.

On the other hand, June's conversation with Aang in the cave in episode 6 of Netflix's Avatar: The Last Airbender proves pretty definitively that she is not an inherently evil character. There is a path to June eventually aligning with Team Avatar and the other forces working to stop the Fire Nation, perhaps as a hired gun at first. Arden Cho has legitimate star power, and her portrayal of June was well-received by critics and fans alike. It makes sense that the creators of Avatar: The Last Airbender would consider expanding June's role
