Does the RTX 5090 Lose Performance in Games That Use GPU Decompression Like Previous NVIDIA GPUs?
DirectStorage on vs off in Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart and Spider-Man 2, both of which support GPU decompression. DirectStorage off uses CPU decompression and DirectStorage on uses GPU decompression.
The 5090 seems to handle GPU decompression better than the 4090. At native 4K in R&C, avg FPS is roughly the same with DS on and off. At 1440p and 1080p, the 5090 performs better with DS on, both in terms of avg FPS and 1% lows.
For reference, here is a comparison in R&C performed on a 4080 by Computerbase: https://www.computerbase.de/news/gaming/ratchet-und-clank-rift-apart-ohne-directstorage-gibt-es-mehr-fps-auf-geforce-gpus.85052/
The 4080 lost quite a bit of performance with DS enabled. Based on my testing, the 4090 lost a similar amount of performance.
In Spider-Man 2, the 5090 loses less performance when DS is enabled than the 4090 did when I last tested it.
