Donkey Kong 64 Playthrough (Actual N64 Capture) - Part 1
This is part 1 of my 101% playthrough of Donkey Kong 64 for the Nintendo 64. This is not an emulator and was not played on the Wii U Virtual Console. This footage was captured directly from my Nintendo 64 using an actual Donkey Kong 64 cartridge.
I received Donkey Kong 64 as my big holiday game for Christmas of 1999. I owned Donkey Kong Classics on the NES since the late '80s and had played Donkey Kong Country at other people's houses, so I was generally a fan of the Donkey Kong series. I didn't really get into the Donkey Kong Country sequels on the SNES (I suppose because of the changing main characters), but I was certainly interested in getting the first 3D Donkey Kong game.
Even though I was a huge fan of Super Mario 64 and was generally interested in 3D platformers, I ended up having mixed feelings about Donkey Kong 64. Although it's a decent platformer and has really fun multiplayer modes, it is a bloated game. This game single-handedly gives new meaning to the term "collectathon," and it can easily keep you busy for a month or so if you're not rushing through it with a strategy guide.
I knew that this game would be an absolutely massive undertaking for me, so that's why I waited so long to post a playthrough. Donkey Kong 64 actually came with the Expansion Pak at no extra cost because apparently, Rare couldn't get it to stop crashing without using the extra RAM. However, I had already picked up the Expansion Pak separately before this game was released, so I ended up giving my extra one to a friend in high school. It was still nice to receive a free RAM expansion though.
Although Donkey Kong 64 uses the Expansion Pak, it doesn't run at a high resolution. It still runs at the same 320x240 resolution as most N64 games, but simply uses the Expansion Pak to create better graphics in general, similar to The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask. However, while editing this footage, I did notice that the start-up screens (before the DK Rap) run at 480i.
Like a few other Rare games, Donkey Kong 64 does include a native widescreen mode, so this entire playthrough will be in widescreen, similar to my GoldenEye and Perfect Dark playthroughs. The game also supports Dolby Surround, which gives you 4.0 surround sound encoded into a stereo signal.
I still have my Nintendo Power Player's Guide for this game, so I will be relying on that to collect all of the items for a maximum 101% completion level. Apparently I have beaten this game completely twice before. I'll also be keeping track of the Golden Bananas I collect in each video based on the total number.
In this first part I started a new save file, learned the Simian Slam, headed into the Jungle Japes area, purchased the Coconut Shooter, and rescued Diddy Kong.
Golden Bananas obtained in this video:
DK Island:
As Donkey Kong:
Golden Banana # 1 - Speak to K.Lumsy - 18:15
Jungle Japes:
As Donkey Kong:
Golden Banana # 2 - In front of Diddy's Cage - 25:56
Golden Banana # 3 - Inside Diddy's Cage - 32:33
Golden Banana # 4 - Donkey Kong Blueprint - 34:24
Recorded with the Hauppauge HD PVR and the official N64 S-video cable with native widescreen mode enabled. I used a Toshiba model D-R550 DVD Recorder to upconvert the N64's native 240p signal to 480i so that the Hauppauge could capture the console's audio/video signal.
I'm using an Arcade Shark joystick.
