Donkey Kong arrives on Ingot Isle amidst a gold rush for crystallized Golden Bananas called Banandium Gems. However, the mining company VoidCo. steals the Gems to power their meteor ship, which sinks the island underground. Donkey Kong is also swept underground and rescues a strange living rock, which decides to accompany him. They discover a vast Hollow Earth-like region called the Underground World, inhabited by animal societies and their ancient Elders. The enormous Kong Elder offers to help the duo, giving Donkey Kong transformative Bananza powers and restoring the rock to its true self, the teenage human girl Pauline. The Elder advises them to continue to the Planet Core to find the Banandium Root, which grants the wishes of its users and can help them return to the surface.
