Doom 2 - 100% Secrets Run in 36:03 (ITYTD) - RTAish
A few things that are important to mention:
1) ITYTD stands for I'm Too Young To Die, aka, the lowest difficulty setting for Doom. I would play on Ultra Violence, but I'm afraid to, so I don't :D
2) Going off of the in-game timer, the final time after Icon of Sin is 36:03. I say "RTAish" in the title, because I save at several points in the run. You'll see me quickly do it all over. I tend to do this when I'm playing Doom or Half-Life, just incase I mess up, I like to quickload, though it's more of a nervous twitch at this point. The run IS a single segment, but, because I do reload a save, I label it as an RTA run.
I believe the Source Runs fellows refer to some Half-Life 2 runs as RTA, because they use quicksaves and loads, so I felt it was fair to label this run similarly. But I labeled it as "RTAish", because RTA in this instance, doesn't refer to the timing of the run, but instead refers to the fact that I loaded a save quickly on the last level, so it's not a true "single segment" per se. This was all done in one sitting, of course, but I made a point not to put "single segment" in the title, just to avoid being misleading. I hope that makes sense, and I hope I got all of my terminology right ._.
3) I play on the zDoom client, which is quite a bit different as compared to vanilla Doom. If you're familiar with Doom, you'll spot quite a few things different. I'll go more in depth about this below, if you're interested. If you're one of those tl;dr types, to put it simply: this isn't intended to be a "real run", as in, attempting to compete with other people.
4) There are two levels, Map 15 and Map 27 (I hope I got those right), where I don't get 100% secrets. Getting 100% secrets on both of those levels is impossible, for reasons I faintly remember. You can look it up yourself if you're interested, I won't pretend to know why you can't get 100% secrets. I guess the areas where the secrets are are impassable or something?
So, author's comments, if somehow you've read this far. I started running this project casually a few months back. I watched, I believe it's Ryback's 100% secrets run on Nightmare, just to get a route in mind. I improved on the route, though that's really not saying much, considering the difficulty I'm playing on. I was focused largely on optimizing "collecting" all of the secrets, I cared less about fighting swarms of enemies, so I played on the lowest difficulty. Also because I'm scared of Ultra-Violence.
Another very good reason why I don't play on UV, is the aforementioned zDoom client. There are a lot of differences between zDoom and vanilla Doom. In zDoom you can do crazy stuff like jump and walk on demon's heads. You can also wall run on walls you shouldn't be able to, and some small things behave differently. I made an effort to not blatantly take advantage of these quirks at all points. For instance, on Map 15, there's an embarrassing moment with myself, a small room and a rocket launcher. I'm trying to kill a zombie just outside the window. In vanilla Doom, that zombie would block your path. In zDoom, you can just run on top of his head, so I tried to be at least somewhat faithful to the original Doom by making an effort to kill him.
But on the level "Barrels o' Fun", I wall run on a wall that will surprise Doom players, and I practically hop over a barrel at the end of the level as well. I don't take advantage of everything I can at all points, but there are some instances, so with all that in mind, I decided to play on the lowest difficulty.
I find myself to be a rather abysmal Doom player, and I practiced this project sporadically for a while, only picking it up just last night ahead for a quick refresher. It wasn't the most rigorously practiced run, so I forget some stuff towards the end, like for example, where I'm going :D
There are many embarrassing mistakes peppered throughout the run, particularly the last level. I can't shoot that damn head properly, I don't know what it is. Thankfully this wasn't a serious undertaking, so I was laughing my ass off at that point. However, A LOT of things went really, really, spectacularly well, like the two Arch-Vile jumps I pull off. Considering this was my first recorded attempt ever, I'm extremely happy with how this turned out. I wish I hadn't fumbled so badly at a few points, but I can live with it, given that this was just for fun anyway.
I hope you enjoy!
