Doom is a first person shooter made by Id software and published by Id, GT Interactive and various other companies depending on the version and platform it was released on. It came out in December 1993.

Note:I played with the Doomsday Engine which can be downloaded here: http://dengine.net/

Soo...Doom. I guess there is not much to tell about Doom which you don't already know. Because FPS games were still in their "infancy" at that time and because Wolf3D and Doom basically defined the genre It was one of the...or maybe even THE most popular game in 1993/94.

The game originally came with three nine-level episodes and the later Ultimate Doom version added a forth episode which is called "Thy Flesh Consumed" although don't ask me why it did not show up for me on the selection screen I don't know :P

Basically Doom is what you expect from a shooter of these days but although it follows the same principle of Wolfenstein3D it does not really rest on it's laurels. Instead it did improve pretty much every aspect of it.

The technology was improved and Id Tech 1 was born which is the engine of the game. This technology was later used in various other titles from Id software and even other developers for completely new and Doom unrelated games.

A special thing about this engine was that you could also use WAD files (short for Where's All the Data?) which are basically packed files that include all the game's content. The community used those files to make mods or total conversions for the game and a part of the game's community is still modding it even today.

Gameplay was also improved, there are more weapons to use,new items to pick up, you fight a lot more diverse enemies and thanks to the new technology the levels are a now way more interesting and complex than they ever were in Wolf3D. And ofcourse you will still find all kinds of secrets scattered throughout the maps ;)

Multiplayer support was added and features two game modes. Cooperative where you and your buddies can play the Singleplayer episodes together and Deathmatch where players kill each other. It should still be playable today with an engine port that supports Multiplayer.
