[Doom II] Fractured Worlds MAP05: Starlit Core in Meltdown (UV 100%)
Wow... What a map. There are so many difficult sections to this map, I'm surprised I made it in under 100 attempts. And with the amount of practice I had to do on individual sections... I've probably spent 20+ hours on this map alone.
The beginning section is tight on resources, and there is so much platforming over inescapable death pits. The room with the arch-vile and pinkies is surprisingly deadly. The platform with the sniping cybers gets really crowded, and you have to keep an eye on those cybers, cause you don't have the health to take a rocket.
In the Plasma Gun fight, you really don't want to shoot and alert the revenants and viles, or it's gonna become way too busy, but the imps can sometimes trap you if you aren't careful. The next room is also extremely deadly. At least there's a small section where the monsters can't go, presumably because that is where the stairs will appear to allow you to grab the key.
The Rocket Launcher room isn't too bad, but you still have to be really careful when you hit the switch in the small circular room. If demons start to flood in, your chances of survival are slim. And the room is perfectly shaped to allow revenant missiles to loop, too. Sweet!
For the next area, you can either do each wave sequentially, or all at once. Triggering all four switches immediately is more dangerous, but it saves time. I played it safe here and did one wave at a time (well, mostly).
There's some more platforming, and some minor encounters after, but the big roadblock is gonna be the red key fight. You simply don't have enough ammo to kill things and make space unless you do some platforming mid-fight, which is just cruel. There's a high chance you'll get pushed off by enemy projectiles as you attempt to grab more resources.
The final fight is not too bad in comparison, but nerves are high after surviving the red key fight. There is just a lot of things happening, and you don't have enough cells to mindlessly spam.
Now the secret fight... What a roller coaster. Things did not go to plan at all! You're supposed to get the cybers in the middle to fight one group of demons at a time, until they're weakened enough or killed, so that you can trigger the final wave and grab the goodies in the center relatively safely. But of course that revenant just had to ruin everything... Coming into the fight I was confident I would beat the map, but that confidence sank for a good moment there. Oh how happy I was when I was able to grab that rad suit!
And with that, just one more map left for the main six...
