A playthrough of Renovation's 1993 fighting game for the Super Nintendo, Doomsday Warrior.

In this video, I go through the entire "normal game" with each of the seven selectable characters. Here are some timestamps:

Sledge, "Hero of Earth" 0:35
P-Lump, "Fat Bomber" 18:34
Amon, "Heavy Metal King" 34:44
Daisy, "Dancing Plant" 50:31
Grimrock, "Dizzen Lizard" 1:08:06
Nuform, "Living Liquid" 1:23:00
Layban, "Military Deserter" 1:38:18

With so many fighting games being published for the Super Nintendo between 1992 and 1994, it was inevitable that some would end up falling through the cracks. Doomsday Warrior was one of the more obscure SNES games to be officially released in North America, and it remained virtually unknown until it somehow made its way to the Switch Online service 28 years later.

The market was already oversaturated - it appeared right around the same time as Fatal Fury's SNES conversion, a few short months ahead of the eagerly anticipated launch of Street Fighter II Turbo - and while it's not a terrible game, it comes across as a game made by people that had never played Street Fighter II or Mortal Kombat. In 1991-92, it would've felt right at home on the Genesis as an alternative to games like Ka-Ge-Ki, Deadly Moves, and Fighting Masters, but Doomsday Warrior felt old-fashioned and out of touch by the time Spring of 1993 rolled around.

In Doomsday Warrior, an evil alien lady named Main has assembled a "Doom Squad" of seven hellions to help her take over Earth, but someone on her squad - the character you pick to play as - has flipped sides and now intends to fight Main as Earth's champion.

You have your choice of seven characters, and most have their own unique throws and special moves. Among the humans, Sledge and Layban take center stage as the Ryu/Ken stand-in pair, Amon is a metal singer who's dressed like a member of the Legion of Doom, and P-Lump is a kung fu Karnov who whips people with his hair. Daisy is an off-brand take on Poison Ivy, Nuform is what happens when the T-1000 mates with a Capri Sun, and Grimrock is a giant lizard that looks a lot like Blackheart.

You fight through your six main opponents in a series of single round battles, and after each of these fights you can spend your remaining health to upgrade your character's abilities. Once that's done, you'll take on two sub-bosses in a series of best-of-three matches before finally facing off against Main herself.

Though they take a bit of getting used to, the controls are simple and stay consistent between characters. There are buttons dedicated to blocking and jumping, and the special moves are all done with simple charge commands (like Guile's Sonic Boom and Flash Kick). The controls are stiff but snappy, and special attacks are easy to pull off reliably.

The in-game graphics are basic but serviceable, but the character-specific endings look great. They're similar to what you'd see in a TurboGrafx-CD game, and that's because the game was created by Telenet's Lasersoft division. Lasersoft was established specifically to create games tailored to the CD format (like Last Alert, Cosmic Fantasy 2, and Valis IV), and their expertise shows in those cutscenes.

Doomsday Warrior is decent, but it lacks substance, depth, and polish. I wouldn't have been happy to have spent $60 on it, but I think I would've enjoyed it as a rental back in the day.
