Coming out a little over two months ahead of its Game Boy Color counterpart (https://youtu.be/N1tFslzICPU), Mario Golf for the Nintendo 64 was the first game made by Camelot to be released on a Nintendo platform, and it marked the beginning of a long-standing exclusive relationship between the two companies. The final installment in the Shining Force III trilogy for Sega Saturn turned out to be the last game they would ever ship for a non-Nintendo console.

It was also the company's second golf game. The first was the original Hot Shots Golf, called Everybody's Golf in Europe, for the Sony PlayStation. If you've played that game, you'll instantly recognize the similarities between it and Mario Golf.

Mario Golf for the N64 eschews the RPG trappings of the GBC game in favor of a more straightforward, arcade-style experience. The gameplay is fast-paced and easy to grasp, and the mechanics are nuanced enough to keep things interesting long after you've worked your way through the considerable amount of content on offer.

There's a multitude of characters, courses, and bonus game modes that can be unlocked by playing well in the tournament and versus modes, and the heavy Mario-theming injects the game with a huge dose of personality and charm - two key elements that the majority of video game golf sims sorely lack.

The controls are intuitive, the challenges are challenging (the Ring Shot mode and the alphabet mini-golf courses can become sheer rage fuel at times!), and the game is a total blast whether you're playing alone or with three friends.

Beyond that, I'm not really sure what else to say about Mario Golf. It's an excellent golf game that doesn't require any love of the sport to enjoy. I personally prefer the Game Boy Color version for its story mode, but you really can't go wrong with either one.
