In a world where old-school rock and "new metal" are often bitterly divided, rare is the band that can bridge the gap between the genres and their fans. Phoenix, Arizona's DRAG OF GRAVITY does just that, however, by combining the musicianship of rock's more historical acts and the relentless energy of it's present. Nowhere is this better illustrated than in the band's multi-faceted debut album, "Down"
The recently-released 14-track effort varies wildly enough in styles to show influences ranging from an extreme variety of sources. Yet the album remains cohesive enough to deliver a unified front to the listener. Fans will hear everything from the frenzy of modern punk energy on the verses of the first single, "The Door," while the hook of the very same song draws from a much more metal-influenced sound. DRAG OF GRAVITY draws the listener in with the hypnotic "120," only to go right for the jugular not long afterward with the brutally-heavy (and brutally honest) "Anomaly." The whirlwind ride known as "Down" will leave fans both bewildered and begging for more. Thank God for the "repeat" button.
Showcased within the album is the collective brilliance of some amazing singular parts, both in terms of individual songs, and individual band members. Lead singer Brian Smith looks like the boy next door, if only the boy next door had incredible vocal abilities that range from beautiful one moment to blistering the next. Meanwhile, guitarist Robert Payne's whirlwind guitars combine a hurricane-like ferocity with a level of musicianship that appeared lost in the rock of recent years. The entire package is then held down by the anchor of a well-constructed rhythm section. The thunder of pure-rock drummer manages to mesh seamlessly with the unmistakably masterful basslines of Gary Hake. When combined, the pieces manage to form a sound that is perfect in terms of rock. No melody is sacrificed for the sake of heaviness, and the heaviness isn't left behind in the melody.
With the recent addition of keyboard prodigy Rocky Searan, the band has managed to intensify their already dense live sound. Long-time veterans of the live scene in the Valley of the Sun, DRAG OF GRAVITY continues to win over new audiences with concert performances that meet the expectations set by the album. Both the band's CD and live shows have drawn consistent comparisons to rock heavyweights as varied as Disturbed, A Perfect Circle, Thrice, Chevelle, and Filter. Yet the sound of DRAG OF GRAVITY remains unique enough to allow the band to stand out from other current acts seeking the spotlight.
