DRAGON QUEST HEROES II: No Grinding Run Pt 01 (Intro / Harba Invasion / Night Clubber)
This is a run of Dragon Quest Heroes 2. The challenge is trying to complete the game with as little grinding as possible, and aside from one section (where I need to grind a little to unlock Multiheal for Teresa early on), I mostly achieve this goal.
I want to try and turn what I've learned about the game from this run into a potential future speedrun at some point (though I'm going to need to do a lot of experimentation first).
This part features the opening battle, the tutorial, the battle for Harba and the Night Clubber boss. There's not much to say about this run so far, from a gameplay perspective, but it's worth mentioning the early options.
First off, there's the ability to shorten Coup de Grace animations. This doesn't completely skip the animations, and you're always forced to watch the full animation for the first time you use a character's Coup de Grace, but you'll be using Coup de Grace a lot that it's just more convenient that way.
Secondly is the choice for Lazarel or Teresa. In terms of story, both characters get only minor differences (they both have different opening cutscenes in that Lazarel is in his room while Teresa is in a boat when they both wake from their dream). I assume the dialogue might be different for one specific section at the end of the game too.
In terms of gameplay, I think the choice only really matters for their tutorial segment (i.e. before reaching Accordia). It comes down to "do you want to use the sword and shield or the twin swords" for the opening segment (and possibly gain extra proficiency for either weapon). For this challenge run, I don't think this choice matters a whole lot, though for a speedrun I imagine you'd want to go with the moveset that attacks faster (and Twin Swords are much faster than the Sword and Shield moveset in terms of attacks).
I went with Lazarel / Twin Swords for this run, because I'm more familiar with him. The Twin Swords are fairly solid early on, because you can cause lots of damage just with Cold Fission to Frost Fangs during High Tension. Soaring Slash is also really good for moving quickly during battle mode (you can go the jumping Dive Attack to Soaring Slash to move quickly). The Twin Swords eventually stopped being really useful towards the end (when you have the full cast) though the Soaring Slash trick was still useful even for the final dungeon.
You can go with Twin Swords if you really want to, but I think as the weapon of the one permanent member of your party, you'll really want something like the Wand (which is absolutely essential, for support and also for causing tons of damage quickly)
