The best way to enter the castle undetected is through the sewers, so the pair start to climb the cliff face that leads there. During their ascent, the sky darkens as a swarm of monsters set out toward the Bastion. With no choice but to press on, they pray for the safety of their fellow survivors and turn their attention back to the treacherous climb.

Hendrik has a hunch that the master of the monsters will have made himself at home in the throne room, but the stairways that lead there lie in ruins, so they set out to search for another way up. They soon stumble on an Yggrasil root, which shows them some scenes from Hendrik's youth, thanks to which the hard-nosed knight remembers a secret staircase.

The pair successfully sneak into the castle, and search for a way to reach the upper levels. After witnessing a vision from the World Tree, Hendrik remembers a secret staircase, and before climbing it, stops Tran to offer his apologies for how he has treated him. The pair steel themselves and proceed upstairs.

They make their way to the throne room, where they find the master of the monsters — none other than Jasper, Hendrik's oldest associate and ally. The hard-nosed knight is hit by a barrage of blows from his old friend which knock him to his knees, but his resolve to protect the Luminary propels him on, and he soon strikes back.

Alas, his sword strikes nothing but empty air, as Jasper disappears with a jarring chuckle, leaving in his place the Spectral Sentinel Tyriant, source of the evil that plagues the area. The two strike this sinister spectre down, and no sooner have they done so, than the darkness over Heliodor dissipates.

Having set out on a quest to find his friends, Tran arrives at the Last Bastion, where he finds King Carnelian and Hendrik. At the King's orders, Hendrik and our hero head out on a mission to infiltrate Heliodor Castle, which has been overrun by marauding monsters. There, they defeat Tyriant one of the six Spectral Sentinels, and in doing so clear the darkness from the skies. Their mission complete, they begin the journey back to the Bastion.

They arrive there to find the villagers, free to leave their homes at last, gathered to greet their returning heroes, and amid the scenes of celebration, Hendrik swears his undying loyalty to the Luminary, and insists on joining Tran on his adventure.

Sunlight streams down upon the hills and valleys once more, and the citizens of the Last Bastion sing and celebrate long into the night. Then, morning comes…
