The franchise Dragon Quest became a major success over the years during the cycle of the NES generation. In fact, there are quite a few games I uploaded on my channel that are close to or inspired by Dragon quest, some of them practically clones. The series helped define a major template for what jrpgs would be in the future and the genre exploded into popularity. This entry will be on the 2nd numbered title of this franchise. Dragon Quest II was released in 1987 originally on the Famicom developed by Chunsoft and published by Enix.

There is quite a bunch of improvements over its predecessor. You are now able to control up to 3 characters instead of just one. You can also fight against multiple monsters at once allowing a greater degree of strategy in combat. The spells have been greatly expanded upon adding a lot more flexibility and diverse combat options. The world of Dragon quest II is now also quite a bit larger. The dungeons now look a bit more distinct with greater contrast of color pallets and variety that stand out more than the original game. One of the innovative features of the classic Dragon quest title which carried on in some early rpgs in the late 80’s was the ability to use torches to light your way through the caverns. This mechanic really didn’t age well and so in this game you can now explore freely without the need of having to light your way through caves, though you must admit, it was a pretty interesting unique and inventive idea back in the day. Since this is a shorter game like the original, both these titles often came bundled together in the same package. Well, my journey through the Original Dragon quest series continues so let’s get started playing Dragon Quest II as its known outside Japan, Dragon Warrior II for the NES.
