Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine is a falling block puzzle game developed by Compile and published by Sega.
It was released for the Genesis/Mega Drive in North America and Europe in November 1993, and ported to the Sega Game Gear in 1993 and Master System in 1994.
The game is a Westernised version of Puyo Puyo (1991), which is the basis for this games localization in the west, a similar thing was done by Nintendo, who created the game Kirby's Avalanche.
In this games instance, the characters are replaced with those from the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, primarily the Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog animated series, which saw success, both in a large quantity of episodes, as well as years later becoming associated with various internet memes, keeping it relevant even to this day in Sonic Fandom.
The Puyo Puyo character Carbuncle appears under the name "Has Bean" and makes different animations depending on how the player plays the game.
The gameplay is similar to puzzle games such as Tetris, in which the player organises coloured shapes as they descend a board.
The plot sees Sonic antagonist Doctor Robotnik kidnapping residents from Beanville and turning them into robots, interestingly enough, this is one of the only Sonic Series games that does not actually include Sonic The Hedgehog himself, instead heavily implying that the player is in fact you!
The game received very positive reviews, and even received various references years later, in the recent Sonic The Hedgehog Movies, Dr.Robotnik's hideout is called the "Mean Bean" Coffee shop, a little detail that could have been very easily missed, however the biggest nod to Mean Bean Machine was in the massively successful game "Sonic Mania" in which the gameplay of Dr.Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine was used for a Boss Battle!
Mean Bean Machine is a relatively simple game, with a few game modes, scenario, 1p vs 2p, and exercise mode, in which you can practise your skills!

And so.... our story begins....

Dr. Robotnik, the evil mastermind of planet Mobius, has hatched a new plan to terrorize the world and its inhabitants - by kidnapping the citizens of Beanville and turning them into devious robot slaves, the doctor intends to create an army that will help him rid the planet of music and fun forever. To this end, he has created a giant roboticizing machine called the "Mean Bean-Steaming Machine" to use on the jolly bean folk of Beanville.
Putting his plan into motion, Robotnik sends out his henchbots to round up all the unfortunate bean folk and group them together in dark dungeons so they can be sent to the Mean Bean-Steaming Machine.
With help from Has Bean, the player must now stand up against Robotnik's henchbots by breaking into the dungeons, freeing the bean folk before it is too late, and get through the henchbots to the deranged doctor himself and foil his evil plans once and for all.
