Dune II : The Building of a Dynasty, also known as the Battle for Arrakis in Europe and on the MegaDrive/Genesis, is a legendary Real-Time Strategy by Westwood Studios. It was released in December of 1992 on PC, Amiga, and then on the Sega the following year.

In this classic RTS, Emperor Frederick IV of House Corrino offers whoever can deliver him the most spice (melange) total control over the planet Arrakis, aka Dune. The player can choose between the vanilla House Atreides, heavy weapons House Harkonnen, or the cunning House Ordos. Once you establish a beachhead, you go about seizing territory from the other houses while avoiding being eaten by Sandworms (the Shai-Hulud) and the rigors of the planet Dune itself as it tears your structures apart. Eventually, if you start to dominate, you will find yourself at odds against both the rival houses as well as the Emperor's elite Sardaukar. Each faction has a different mentat/advisor as well as different units cutscenes/endings.

One of the cooler features is that you could capture enemy factories and produce their units, but this feature was broken for Ordos because their Deviator tank, which switched units to your side when you were playing Ordos, also... switched enemies to the side of Ordos even if captured and built them with another faction (WHAT?!). Eventually you will build a palace and harness the power of your faction's superweapons, which I won't spoil for you, but they are pretty sweet.

This game will go down in history as one of the greatest early RTS games ever. It's still a fantastic game today, having aged really well, and I highly recommend it to anyone in the mood for some retro gaming. This game is abandonware, so you can download it for free to play with DOSBox (just google it).
