Dungeon Magic: Sword of the Elements is a first-person RPG (similar in vein to Bard's Tale and the various SSI D&D games) produced by Taito in 1989, and programmed by Natsume for the Nintendo Entertainment System.
One of the interesting aspects of the game was a magic system where a caster could combine runes from various elements to form new magic spells.
Each element had three unique runes, which allowed for 125 different spells. Unfortunately, many of those "different spells" are actually just fireball spells or curative effects. This game had no "magic point" system, so some spells drained the player's hit points instead.
In the story, the evil sorcerer Darces took over our world once again. The only way to defeat him is to find five elemental swords and to combine them into the ultimate weapon which is the only possibility to destroy the villain. Naturally, you, the nameless hero, are the one who is chosen to go on this dangerous journey.
Dungeon Magic is a first-person RPG that looks similar to Wizardry games, but instead of the usual turn-based combat you fight your enemies in real time, parrying to avoid their blows and attacking physically or casting offensive magic to hurt them. You explore large outdoor areas, towns, and dungeons, and specialize in five kinds of magic.
