E3 13: Wolfenstein: The New Order - Interview
´Senior gameplay designer Andreas Öjerfors talks us through the developer vision for the new Wolfenstein and legacy the series comes with.
Speaking about the overall gameplay design and how you go about making sure it's old school without missing out on modern features:
"We look back at the old school shooter games and we try to kind of take the best from those and marry them with a more modern day school of design. We think that there were some things left behind in the old school era that maybe shouldn't have been left behind. So we're bringing those elements back, those design principles back, and we kind of make a cohessive whole out of that with a modern school of design."
Having been inspired by such landmark fiction as The Man in the High Castle (Philip K. Dick), Machine Games have taken their concept of a retro future all the way:
"It was alternate history ever since Wolfenstein 3D, because you kill Hitler. And after you kill Hitler it's no longer the history we know, right? So we kind of took that idea and leaped with it, and jumped into 1960's and asked the question: What would have happened if the Nazis had won the war, World War II, and taken over the world and created a global Nazi empire? What kind of world would that be?"
"The technology of Wolfenstein: The New Order is what we call retro sci-fi. And it's retro sci-fi in the context of thinking of the 1960's and what kind of tech did they think of and fantasise of in the 1960's? What were their ideas of advanced technology of the future? So you have the space age thing with big robots, you've got the laser weaponry and all those kind of things."
