A playthrough of SNK's 1991 license-based best 'em up for the SNK Neo Geo AES, Eight Man.

Played through on the normal difficulty level.

"Runs as fast as lighting, the eighth super robot. He's called EIGHT MAN!"

Eight Man is based on a 1960s era Japanese anime featuring a cop who, after being cut down in the line of duty by criminals, is brought back as a crime-fighting superhero cyborg in a secret lab. No, this isn't RoboCop, even if it's pretty clear from where RoboCop derived much of its "inspiration."
Eight Man is an early Neo Geo game, and it works hard to sell itself through its presentation. This 46megabit cart features some impressively flashy action for its time - the stages go flying by at a breakneck speed as a constant stream of enemies flood the screen. The gameplay itself doesn't move as fast as the game makes it appear to, but the high-speed spectacle certainly helps to keep things exciting, and the sprite-scaling looks good in action. I also really liked the colors they used: it looks strikingly different from most other games in how it likes to mix neon with darker muted tones for contrast. It does clash, but I found it to be unexpectedly attractive. The sound is also well done - the speech samples are surprisingly clear for such an old game, and the Neo's FM synth is put to good use with some heavy, driving beats.
