What is Empires of the Undergrowth?

Empires of the Undergrowth is a simulation-style strategy game in which the player controls an ant colony. Underground the ants excavate their nest, store food and grow in number. On the surface they claim territory, overwhelm insects and arachnids and clash with other colonies! We have taken influence from classic Dungeon Keeper for nest construction, and others will notice some SimAnt in our game. Combat with large insects and other colonies plays like a tug-of-war that you might see in some of Starcraft 2’s arcade maps. The game’s theme of insects and the story being told like a documentary programme add something more unique into the mix, all of this comes together to make a truly different experience.

History

The concept of Empires of the Undergrowth was born from various discussions the three of us shared at university. As passionate gamers ourselves, we had noticed a lack of good dungeon management games available and even fewer ant games available that had been anything more than squashing ants to get points. The two ideas coupled together sparked an exciting opportunity, but it wasn’t until many years after graduation when even the EA release of Dungeon Keeper mobile didn't feel true to the original game, that we decided to make Empires a reality. With backgrounds in engineering, computer science and web development, our skill set is both relevant and broad. Liam and Matt have just finished their respective PhDs and John has gained years of experience working in web design and educational applications. All three of us have now been able to dedicate more of our time and energy to rapidly bring this unique game to life.
