I've heard people get confused with these two similar verbs, and so in order to explain how each works, first revisit which prepositions are attached to each and provide examples of other verbs that take those propositions to help recall how to use these verbs.

The "to" and the "from" help establish the directionality involved, and who is doing the borrowing, and who the lending.
