Part 0 of 48

You may have noticed that my uploads had been pretty quiet as of late...And if you thought I was planning a playthrough of the next game, you're absolutely right. The next game I'll cover will be Epic Mickey, though some insist you call it Disney Epic Mickey. That's with Walt's name on it.

The sorceror Yen Sid ("Disney" spelled backwards; voiced by Corey Burton) has worked with Walt to create a place where forgotten and neglected characters can live. Popular fellows like Donald, Goofy, Pluto, and yes, Mickey live in Yen Sid's world, while everyone else lives in Wasteland. It's a miniature world made of magical paint that rests on Yen Sid's table, corrected using magical thinner. Mickey (voiced by Bret Iwan), Yen Sid's former apprentice (likely kicked out for causing trouble with brooms), sneaks back into the workshop, sees Wasteland, and accidentally creates the Shadow Blot. In a panic to erase it, Mickey spills both paint and thinner into Wasteland. (Notice that the thinner falls directly onto a Wonderland-looking place and gets destroyed entirely. This is Fantasyland, a region planned to be in the game but got canceled to make the holiday 2010 release.)

Some time later, Mickey sleeps in his bed when a gigantic arm shows up and pulls Mickey into the world he wrecked, but not before Mickey manages to grab the magic paintbrush as a last-ditch measure. Now, he'll have to find a way back home, but not before fixing the mess he had created--and if you looked at the damage he did, that is quite the mess to fix.

Three things though: First, this game is chock-full of references. As a kid, I watched as many of these shorts and movies as I could, and being a southern California resident, I have visited Disneyland a bunch of times. I'll try to find and point out whatever references I can recognize, but I don't think I'll be able to explain everything. Correct me if I have gotten anything wrong. (I have not seen the Oswald shorts, for instance. But I was actually familiar with Oswald the Lucky Rabbit as a Disney character.)

Second, this game is dark. As in its color scheme. If you can, adjust your monitor settings if you want to marathon my playthrough. If it's not adjusted perfectly, it may be hard to make out stuff.

Lastly, there is a morality system in this game. Mickey began not as the wholesome mascot, but as a kind of unrepentant troublemaker who got on everybody's nerves. In Epic Mickey, you can either regain the respect of the citizens of Wasteland by undoing the mess one bit at a time (called the Paint Path), or you can become the scourge of Wasteland by killing off Mickey's enemies in cold blood (called the Thinner Path). Being the altruist I am, I will take the Paint Path. In addition, the game auto-saves after every decision, big or small, meaning you can't go back once you've made a choice or forgot something. (More on this later.) This will be a first-time playthrough, with no prior knowledge other than the basic plot at work and the morality system.

A factoid here: If you thought Mickey has been pretty bland as of late, you're not alone. Walt himself thought that pretty early on and gave Donald Duck more cartoon appearances from the 1940s and onwards, feeling Donald to be the more interesting character.

Now, I will attempt to identify every calendar page I can make out. As it turns out, the calendar images are in chronological order.
