Definitely better than World Class Soccer - at least here you are provided with a full competition experience, rather than just single games - but it still falls short of being a standout soccer title, especially on a handheld system.
The gameplay feels limited, with short and high passes often proving ineffective for building attacks, relegating them mainly to clearing the ball. On Hard, there's a dominant goal-scoring method that, once mastered (it takes half a dozen matches, at worst) makes the game relatively easy, taking away some of the challenge.
Overall, while European Soccer Challenge adds depth compared to its only Lynx rival, it ultimately struggles to deliver a truly engaging soccer experience on the Atari handheld.
