Skip to 4:13 for the actual speedrun.

As of the 13th of November 2014, I "John" rank number 1 in the European Speed Golf 4. While this recording is not my best attempt, I wanted to demonstrate on webcam (as it's my only way to record footage) the tips and tricks I use to gain the quickest time. I would've liked to record my best time, but I lack to the patience to do so.

I positioned the webcam to hang from my desk with the cable being tied around the stand to prevent it from moving. Sorry for the sub-par image and poor sound quality.

Here are some tips for obtaining a quick time in Speed Golf:

Driving

If your shot results in a draw or a fade, especially the maximum attribute one can get with the best equipment, you can adjust the impact point to the opposite side of your curved shot to "straighten" your shot to gain about 5% more distance. This can help get you on the green if you're just running short from the green.

Avoid most fairways and don't top-spin

If you hit the ball on to the fairway, it can chew up seconds as the ball rolls for a little while. Plus if you're top-spinning as well, it just makes the ball spend more time rolling. Distance only matters if you can drive the ball on to the green. Also, try hitting into bunkers and roughs as it will almost always make the ball come to a complete stop. You can save up to 4 seconds at a time. Everything is situational. Sometimes it will be in your best interest to just hit on the fairway.

Back-spin, back-spin, back-spin!

Back-spins can help shave seconds off a drive as it will slow down the ball rolling and can make it come to a complete stop. If you are approaching the green and your shot has a high trajectory, back-spinning won't be as effective as it just makes the ball spend more time rolling. Back-spinning a 45-degree angle on descent will very much make the ball come to a complete stop.

NEVER, EVER, EVER use the approach gauge

Using the approach gauge (the blue one) will use up more time as the gauge line moves slower than the normal gauge. If you have good precision in getting a "good shot", then you can use the normal yellow one, This is paramount for getting quick times.

Avoid having the ball spend too much time in the air

If your ball is relatively close to the green, your next shot is probably a wedge, and their trajectories can be quite high, depending on the status of your character. If you can do it quickly, change up a few clubs to lower the time the ball is spend in the air. Of course, this means that your marker on the swing gauge will not correspond the distance to the hole, so it may take practice calculating how much power you need with a lower club. And yes, as it is lower trajectory, the ball is prone to rolling more, so I say, put back-spin. This will take practice.

Putting

Whenever I putt, I tend to go up from short to medium because the line on the swing meter will have less to travel when determining my power. And of course, when it comes to aiming, over time, your judgment will improve and your aims won't be long to set up.

Study the course and practice

I might have played the Forest Course back 9 like maybe over 100 times and I surprise myself that I remember the layouts for those holes. When I first began doing the speed run, I would always, extend my view to see where I would hit the ball, and I know now it cost me seconds doing so. I pretty much do it blindly now. And of course, practice! I think doing these speed runs have improved my accuracy in terms of getting a "good shot". Every run you do will get progressively better. After gaining experience from the European Speed Run 1, my first times have been getting much better. My first attempt netted me 4:10:00ish and I thought that was quick. Now I have 3:31:47

Well I hope you enjoy this video and happy speed golfing!
