Evolution of Infinite 1-UP Tricks in Super Mario Games (NES, FDS, SNES, DS, Wii)
7This is a compilation of infinite 1-UP tricks in the Super Mario series. Played in real time on BizHawk 2.3.0, Snes9x 1.6, DeSemu 0.9.13, and Dolphin 5.0 with re-records used to optimize video length.
Super Mario Bros. (NES) (1985)
You have to hit the koopa shell while it's in a certain position. It may take a few tries sometimes, but once you time your jumps right anybody can do it. Just don't get more than 128 lives if you're playing the NES version of SMB, or you will automatically get a "Game Over" the next time you lose a life (this glitch was fixed in the All-Stars and Deluxe versions). This trick is present in Worlds 3-1 and 7-1 in SMB, and also in the DS & Wii versions of New Super Mario Bros.
Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels (FDS) (1986)
The same 1-UP trick from the original Super Mario Bros. also works in The Lost Levels, except you'll have to break some of the brick blocks just to get the trick to work. Luckily, there's a power up mushroom hidden nearby but don't let it escape you, though. Make sure the koopa shell is standing on the bottom-right brick block or you'll have to try again from the beginning.
Super Mario World (SNES) (MSU-1) (1991)
This is by far the hardest 1-UP trick to carry out. In Donut Secret 1, there is a secret area accessible by a warp pipe. Grab a koopa shell from there, lose whatever power-up you have, carry the koopa shell to a narrow corridor, and carefully drop it between the two grab blocks.
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island (SNES) (MSU-1) (1995)
There are two 1-UP tricks found in Worlds 1-7 and 4-1. Find a ball or koopa shell and carry it over to the Shy Guy pipe. Note that you must have less than six eggs or the Shy Guys will no longer pop out. Release the ball or koopa shell, let it roll, and eventually Shy Guys will pop out and run into it. Since there is no time limit in this game, you can stay as long as you need to, and enjoy the free 1-ups.
New Super Mario Bros. (DS) (2006)
Carry the koopa shell to the pyramid in World 1-1, but don't let go. Let the koopa pop back out of its shell.
