Excitebike 64 - Original Excitebike Mode (Actual N64 Capture)
This is a capture of me playing the Original Excitebike mode in Excitebike 64 for the Nintendo 64. This is not an emulator and was not played on the Wii U Virtual Console. This footage was recorded directly from my Nintendo 64 using a real Excitebike 64 cartridge. I'm playing through Selection B of Excitebike.
My prior videos of this game suffered from some quality loss due to me deinterlacing the footage in Sony Vegas (it blurs the footage) and uploading at a 480 resolution. Youtube processes different resolutions at different bit rates, so even you if you render a 480p video at a high bit rate, Youtube will reduce it anyway through its terrible processing. I don't have the raw footage of my prior Excitebike 64 recordings, so I decided to record all new footage and upload the videos in a higher quality.
The original NES Excitebike is included in Excitebike 64 as a "Special Track," similar to how NES Metroid was included in Metroid Prime. I don't actually own the original NES Excitebike cartridge since it's included in Excitebike 64 and Nintendo also gave me the 3D version for free on my 3DS back in 2011.
Interestingly though, the sound is slightly off with this emulation of NES Excitebike. One of the programmers from Left Field commented on my prior upload of this mode and noted that he didn't have access to the actual NES hardware when he was emulating this game, so that could explain why it doesn't sound quite right.
I think that same programmer later gave an interview where he said that he made his NES emulator over a couple of weekends (see here: https://nintendoeverything.com/excite-bike-64-devs-on-the-games-development-origins-miyamoto-feedback-more/).
Despite the sound issue, the emulation otherwise seems spot on. Also, this new recording now properly displays at 60 fps, unlike my prior upload. For this video I played through Selection B, which includes the AI racers. There are only five tracks in NES Excitebike, so I completed all five tracks at least once before getting a game over.
Recorded with the Hauppauge HD PVR and the official N64 S-video cable at 60 frames per second. I used a Toshiba model D-R550 DVD Recorder to upconvert the N64's native 240p signal to 480i so that the Hauppauge could capture the console's audio/video signal.
I'm using a standard N64 controller.
