The F1 Japanese Grand Prix is held at the Suzuka Circuit located in Mie Prefecture. The first race was held at Fuji Speedway in 1976. The Suzuka Circuit is a challenging circuit that greatly tests the skills of the drivers, and it continues to be loved by many drivers.

Suzuka Circuit is an international racing course located in Suzuka City, Mie Prefecture, known for hosting the F1 Japanese GP, Super Formula, and the Suzuka 8-hour Endurance Road Race.

In addition to the racing track, it is a leisure complex that includes an amusement park and a hotel, and is operated by Honda Mobilityland Corporation, a subsidiary of Honda, a major Japanese automobile manufacturer.

It was established in 1962. The figure-8 layout designed by German John Hugenholtz was highly regarded as advanced at the time. It is the only one of its kind among F1 courses.

Since then, the track has undergone a series of minor modifications, the most significant of which were implemented in the 1980s, when the chicane was added before the final corner and the Degner was split into two separate corners.

There is only one DRS zone on the main straight. The DRS detection point was set at 70m before turn 15, and the DRS start point was set at 100m from the control line. The first half of the course requires the aerodynamic efficiency of the car, and the second half requires the horsepower of the engine.

This is one of the most valuable overtaking points. From the downhill home straight, the cars in front use the slipstream and late braking to attack the cars in front.

In the case of F1 cars, after exiting Turn 1 at full throttle, braking for Turn 2. How fast the car can get out of Turn 2 will determine how well the S-curve will be executed.

The S-curve corner, which is the continuous corner section in the first sector leading up to Dunlop Corner, is highly praised by the world's top drivers (Turns 3, 4, and 5). It is so called because of its shape like the letter ""S"" when seen from above. Turn 3=70R, Turn 4=70R, Turn 5=75R.

If you miss the entry of the first turn 3 at S, you will not be able to recover until you exit Dunlop Corner. It is said that the key to improving lap time at Suzuka is in the S-curve.

Generally, the corners are banked from the outside to the inside, but since Turn 6 is flat and has no slope for the most part, it is affectionately called ""reverse banking"" because it gives the illusion that the slope is reversed (from the inside to the outside) when actually driven.

The Degner Curve, consisting of turns 8 and 9, is a notorious corner for drivers new to Suzuka. It was named after Ernst Degner from the former East Germany, who crashed here during the 1962 race, which was the opening event of Suzuka. At that time, the corner was a single corner, but in 1987, it was modified to have two corners with different radii connected by a short straight line, leading to the current shape. Numerous drivers have crashed here.

The ""first Degner"" (turn 8) is difficult to brake because of the bumps on the line. In most cases, drivers either miss the first entry, fail to reach the ""Degner 2"" (turn 9), and run into the gravel, or fail to exit the second and run off the course.

In January 2020, the track surface from 100 meters before turn 8 to turn 9 was resurfaced, the artificial grass was removed, and new double curbs were installed in this section.

Despite the 18 corners, the full throttle ratio at Suzuka is about 30% higher than the average for all F1 circuits, with the engines running at full throttle for about 66% of the lap. The only corner where the car passes at speeds below 100 km/h is the hairpin (turn 11). However, the overall speed is not high throughout the entire lap, and it is largely due to the section from the exit of the Spoon to the final chicane.

This section, which includes the ""130R"" corner, a super high-speed corner that can be passed at speeds of over 300 km/h, is approximately 1.5 km long, and although it is not a straight course, for F1 cars it is a de facto straight where the engines are fully open.

The maximum speed is recorded just before the final chicane, where F1 cars can reach speeds of up to 320 km/h. The maximum time at full throttle is 16 seconds. The brakes are used only 10% of the time during a lap, so there is almost no load on the brakes. Because this is a high-speed circuit, machine balance at high speeds is important. Rear stability and a responsive front end are necessary to improve time.

Suzuka is a track where engine power and weight have a large impact on lap times, generally making a difference of 0.19 seconds per lap per 10 horsepower and 0.20 seconds per lap per 10 kg.

Suzuka is loved by drivers
Four-time F1 world champion Sebastian Vettel is said to have revered Suzuka, describing it as ""God's own circuit,"" although he does not recall ever saying so. However, he asserts that it is his favorite circuit in the world.
