Facebook freebooting is still a problem!
927The ripping and re-uploading of online content (particularly videos taken from YouTube and re-uploaded to Facebook) is still a significant problem despite having been exposed almost 2 years ago. Of course this can occur because the person/organisation stealing and re-uploading the content is trying to pass it off as their own work but in many cases of Facebook freebooting, including what happened to me, I believe that it's simply down to the way Facebook promotes videos from different sources.
Direct uploads get a hugely preferential treatment on Facebook compared to shared links of videos hosted on other sites such as YouTube. This creates a strong incentive for content aggregators to freeboot videos rather than sharing the original links. Added to this, there seems to be a distinct lack of consequences for freebooters while content creators are threatened with legal action 3 times while submitting a complaint to Facebook...
If you see content that may have been stolen and re-uploaded without the creators consent, contact the original creators with a link to make them aware of the possible theft!
