Fallout 2 - how to kill Pariah (bad luck dog)
Fallout 2 - how to kill Pariah (bad luck dog)
Some say it's difficult to kill (almost impossible with weapons), but I found it quite easy. But why and how did I come to this?
I was wandering in desert and saw a dog, lots of dead bodies around it but otherwise encounter didn't seem dangerous. I tried to talk to the dog, give some dry meat to it but dog didn't react. I left eventually, and some time later when got into fight noticed strange coward dog running around. It always ran away when fighting started, came back when fights were ended. I also noticed weapons exploding or jamming all the time, people fell over in fights often, lots of accidental friendly fire. Then I started to examine the dog closely, and noticed it's bad luck dog, also referred as "that damn dog". It had been following me too long, it was lurking in all saved games.
Attempts to get rid off it: tried to cage it into caves, let it die to radiation, kill it with a weapon in my hands but nothing worked. In my experiments to hurt the damn dog weapon in hand exploded and/or bullets dropped to the ground and were lost, radiation didn't make damage to the dog and that damn dog also managed to open doors I closed behind it. Oh the desperation, I was in early start and had found only 3 cities so far. How can I keep playing without any luck? Should I just trust that enemies also have equally bad luck?
I remembered dog being extremely fast, it ran away always when fighting began. My first conclusion was to prevent that so I broke its legs so it could not run and escape. That needed couple of tries with combat knife, but worked quite well. Useful thing having it crippled was that it helped me hitting Pariah to the eyes because it often laid down still for a moment. I think I recrippled its leg(s) maybe 5 times or more, until changed the tactics again. This time my target was the eye (examined the dog, its other eye is glass).
Just after few successful hits with combat knife (thrust, target eyes) I noticed that damn dog getting more and more wounded, so I kept hitting (used thrust to make maximum damage) it to the eyes with combat knife. Having bad luck with me I also hit myself occasionally (actually damaged myself so much I considered giving up), picked dropped combat knife from the ground very often (which was slowing my project and was annoying as hell) and also my companions mistakenly tasted my knife. Best tactic was to hit until action points almost ran out and exiting the battle. This way Pariah didn't have chance to react, it stayed all the time next to me. Well, with crippled legs it could not ran far anyway.
Killing Pariah with combat knife took 15 minutes, but from that time you can decrease time spent crippling the dog and time spent picking up dropped knife from the ground.
