Farworld Pioneers - Game Review

Hello, gaming veterans! Today we're taking a look at a game that aspires to carve its niche in the popular genre of procedurally generated survival games. "Farworld Pioneers" seeks to be the next big leap in the realm of titles like Minecraft, No Man’s Sky, Terraria, and Starbound.

In this game, our adventures take us across the cosmos, visiting alien planets and establishing thriving colonies of pioneers. You can choose to play in online multiplayer mode, PVP, or single-player. For the purposes of this review, I'll be sharing my experience of the game from a single-player perspective.

Developed by the talented team at Igloosoft Games, with a pedigree that includes impressive games like Ultimate Chicken Horse, RimWorld, Gnomoria, and Starbound, expectations for Farworld Pioneers were high, especially for those of us who love 2D survival games.

Right off the bat, Farworld Pioneers welcomes you with a tutorial that offers a run-through of the game’s mechanics, including building, crafting, and directing your fellow pioneers. The tutorial also guides you towards an in-game tool tip for assistance on what to do next. However, the game presumes a fairly advanced understanding of survival games, which may not suit all players.

One of the immediate challenges I encountered involved dealing with the constant needs of my colonists. The game kept notifying me that they needed a bed and food. While I eventually figured out how to make a bed, the food notifications remained somewhat confusing, as colonists seemed to be able to access food automatically. This adds an extra layer of stress when you're trying to explore and learn the game.

The game's combat system also seemed problematic, especially in terms of movement and aiming. The controls felt somewhat clunky and less smooth than in other games like Terraria or Starbound. Also, the game’s UI could use some simplification, as it currently appears cluttered and could hamper the player's immersion.

Balancing numerous real-time commands – from mining, crafting, and building to managing colonists' hunger and sleep – was a challenging juggling act. Instead of synergizing, these systems often felt like they were in conflict, creating a rather stressful solo playing experience. A levelling system also exists for your colonists as they improve at tasks, but it's unclear whether the game intends for you to specialize in one area or manage all of them simultaneously.

Nevertheless, the exhilaration of blasting off into space and landing on a new world is undeniable. This thrill, however, doesn't quite compensate for the shortcomings of the game's mechanics.

In conclusion, Farworld Pioneers fell short of my expectations due to its clashing systems and subpar movement and combat mechanics. But much like other games in this genre, there's hope that a few updates can help this title find its footing. So here's hoping that the upcoming console release will improve upon the game's current state and fully realize the potential that Farworld Pioneers clearly possesses.
