The year 2015 saw releases of numerous video games, including new installments for some well-received franchises, such as Anno, Assassin's Creed, Batman: Arkham, Battlefield, Call of Duty, Disgaea, Dirt, Fallout, Fatal Frame, Forza Motorsport, Guitar Hero, Halo, Heroes of Might and Magic, Hotline Miami, Just Cause, King's Quest, Kirby, Magicka, Mario Party, Mario vs. Donkey Kong, Metal Gear, Minecraft, Mortal Kombat, Need for Speed, OlliOlli, Resident Evil, Rock Band, StarCraft, Star Wars: Battlefront, Tales, The Witcher, Tomb Raider, Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, Total War, Toy Soldiers, Xenoblade Chronicles, Yakuza and Yoshi. In addition, it saw the release of many new intellectual properties, including Dying Light, Evolve, Life Is Strange, Bloodborne and Splatoon, and independent video games such as Rocket League, Undertale, Ori and the Blind Forest and Her Story.
Studio records
It is the first year that a single studio (Universal Pictures) released three films that each grossed over $1 billion,[2] the first year that a single studio released two films that both grossed over $1.5 billion, and the first year that a single studio released two films that both grossed over $1 billion outside of North America.
Universal also generated $2 and $3 billion in a single year at the international box office faster than any studio before, doing so on June 10, June 14, and July 17, 2015 respectively. The previous records was held by 20th Century Fox when it reached $2 and $3 billion on June 15 and July 30, 2010 respectively. Universal previously grossed $2 billion in 2013, reaching the milestone on September 17 of that year.[3][4] Furthermore, the studio also broke the record for fastest studio to generate $1 billion in the United States and Canada (on June 14, 2015), beating the previous record ascendance achieved by Paramount Pictures on June 22, 2008,[4] and $2 billion (on August 16, 2015), beating the previous speed record of December 25, 2009 held by Warner Bros.,[5] and the fastest to $3, $4, and $5 billion worldwide (It achieved the $5 billion milestone on July 17, 2015, breaking the record previously held by Fox near the end of November 2014). Universal is also the first studio to achieve $6 billion at the global box office in one year. Marvel Studios became the first studio to produce three films within a single franchise—the Marvel Cinematic Universe—that each grossed over $1 billion, with Avengers: Age of Ultron joining 2012's The Avengers and 2013's Iron Man 3. The Marvel Cinematic Universe also became the highest-grossing film franchise with the release of Avengers: Age of Ultron, surpassing the Harry Potter film franchise ($7.723 billion, 2001–2011), and becoming the first franchise to gross over $8 billion. With the subsequent release of Ant-Man, the Marvel Cinematic Universe also became the first franchise to gross over $9 billion.
Film records Amy has broken the UK box office record for the highest opening weekend of a British documentary film, grossing at £519,000 from 133 cinemas three days after its release on 3 July. It also enjoyed success in the US, earning £142,000 from just six cinemas before it expanded in the following weeks. The film scored a $37,002 site average in the US in just 3 days. the documentary has recorded the biggest ever opening weekend for a British documentary in the UK, and the second biggest discounting concert films of all time. The film opened with $222,015 across six sites, with a location average of $37,002 – $10,000 more than Fahrenheit 9/11 (2004) managed on its first weekend and even beating March of the Penguins (2005) 's $44,373 and the film has increased its box office peak after its initial release nationally on 10 July.
Furious 7 became the fastest film to accrue $1 billion in tickets sales worldwide, doing so in 17 days; this record was later surpassed by Universal's own Jurassic World two months later, accruing the same amount in 13 days; this record was in turn surpassed six months later by Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which accrued $1 billion in 12 days. Jurassic World grossed $524.4 million worldwide in its opening weekend, making it the highest-grossing worldwide opening of all time.
