UPDATE: As of the Awakening DLC in March 2018, I no longer recommend using this method to farm materials. A much faster way is to use "Level Reset" from the Temple at camp. By setting a Lv.50 character back to Lv.1 you get 10 silver mats and 5 gold mats. For a Lv.100 character you get 20 silver mats and 10 gold mats, and so on. Just play through the game normally and sell unneeded weapons to get the required cash. (1,000,000 per Level Reset) Although, if you're making use of this you do want to mind how you spend your gold. If you appraise an ton of skills on your weapons you probably won't have much left to work with!

--------------------------------------------------------------

The focus this time is on collecting mats from playable characters of your choosing, and boosting Support ranks on the side as well. I heard this idea floating around on GameFAQs, though I don't know who came up with it first.

We're going to Chapter 20 of the main story. The idea here is that there are enemy Shadows based on which characters you field, and those Shadows drop items based on the characters they've taken the form of.

Every directly controllable character EXCEPT the leader in the top-right gets 2 Shadows. The main lord you chose at the start of the game, Rowan or Lianna, will get 1 Shadow whether or not you actually fielded them. So based on my character choices there will be 2 Anna Shadows, 2 Lissa Shadows, 2 Ryoma Shadows and 1 Rowan Shadow.

The first set of Shadows appears when you're in front of the keeps at the top of the map. When you beat all the Mages at the top, the keep at the center opens up and a Shadow of your main lord appears. Approach this guy and when the battle messages clear out their backlog, a second set of Shadows appears; that's 7 character-specific materials in all.

About Support grinding: I do switch the character Ryoma is paired up with a few times, since there's a different sound effect and heart graphic to tell you that the Support won't go up further. The main thing though, is to have everyone gather around and take damage so that you can heal many times, and every heal boosts the Support rank a little. Staff users will get the most out of it, but those without staves can get in on the healing with Rowan's Potent Potion skill.

That's why I set everyone to defend 1 person, in this case Ryoma, so they'll huddle up nice and close. I also turned off Autoheal so I can time my heals to go off when many targets are healable. It may be best to leave only Shadow Rowan/Lianna alive, so that nobody tries to run off to engage another target.

Here I've gotten 7 Support rank ups in succession. I _think_ there's a limit to how many can rank up at once though. Sometimes I have the characters from these grinding runs level up Support in some other mission they were deployed with, even though they were actually Paired with someone else.
