I just finished building the '65 Princeton Reverb guitar amplifier kit from Stewart MacDonald with my 5 year-old daughter and 7 year-old son. It was a great bonding activity, we had lots of fun, and the results are fantastic. It worked perfectly the first time we plugged it in. The Reverb hums a bit when turned up past 3, but I am told (by StewMac customer support) that is just the nature of the beast. Very pleased overall, and now we are working on a Heathkit AM Radio, and the Heathkit Digital Clock kit is on the shelf queued up next.
