Final Fantasy VII Remake is an action role-playing game developed and published by Square Enix, released for PlayStation 4 on April 10, 2020. It is the first in a planned series of games remaking the 1997 PlayStation game Final Fantasy VII.
Players control a mercenary (merc) named Cloud Strife as he and other members of the eco-terrorist group AVALANCHE battle the corrupt Shinra megacorporation from using the planet's (Gaia) lifestream essence as an energy source. Events send them on great adventures, on the way to finding and stopping the legendary soldier Sephiroth, who desires to possess the lifeblood of Gaia to become a demigod. The gameplay combines real-time action similar to Square Enix's previous release Final Fantasy 15 with a new pack of other strategic elements.
General gameplay and battle moment mechanics both take place in real-time. The title has altered the original game's mechanics into an "Active Time Battle" (ATB) system, which gradually fills up slowly or can fill up faster with attacks during a battle. Once filled, the player can stop the action and use special abilities such as magic, items, and special moves that are different for each character. The player can also place these special abilities to the input shortcuts, allowing them to play in full real-time without any strategic "break". Each special ability uses a part of the ATB bar. The player can also switch between party members at any time. Each member of the party has their own personal skills, such as melee attacks (e.g. Cloud) and long-range attacks (e.g. Barret). Players can also use magic and summons, and the Limit Break meter allows characters to perform even more powerful attacks after filling the meter up. Producer Yoshinori Kitase noted that while there are more real-time elements in the game, there would still be strategic elements, such as the choice of weapons and magic for each character. This provides players with alternative gaming experiences.
