The tension is palpable here today at the Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California, as we bring you the MLS Cup for the second year in a row. This year, it’s LAFC battling the Philadelphia Union. Both teams are entering their first final in history; in the playoffs, they were both the number-one seeds in their conferences; now we find out who is number one in the MLS. It’s been a big week for Philadelphia already; on Thursday, the Phillies defeated the Astros to win their first World Series since 2008, now the Philadelphia Union look to win their first MLS Cup in history. The Philadelphia Union began play in the MLS in 2010; LAFC joined the league in 2018, amidst the rapid expansion that is still going on to this day. As I mentioned, both teams were the number-one seed in their respective conferences entering the playoffs; because of this, both teams got a bye in the first round, going directly into the conference semifinals. LAFC began their playoff journey with a 3-2 victory over LA Galaxy in El Trafico; Denis Bouanga scored twice and Cristian Arango scored in injury time to be the hero for the number-one seed. Philadelphia defeated Cincinnati 1-0 thanks to a goal by Leon Flach. In the conference finals on Sunday, LAFC defeated Austin 3-0, with goals by Arango, Opoku, and an own goal by Maximiliano Urruti. Philadelphia defeated New York City 3-1 thanks to Carranza, Gazdag, and Burke.
