Crimefile Number 1, the File on Bolitho Blane, was written by Dennis Wheatley and planned by J.G. Links. It was originally published in 1936 in the United Kingdom under the title "Murder Off Miami." The crime dossier provides interviews with suspects, testimonies, photographical, and physical clues for the reader to examine and study, following the investigation of Detective Kettering. This book would become so successful, that they would go on to make 3 additional murder mystery books.

Dennis Yates Wheatley was an English writer whose prolific output of thrillers and occult novels made him one of the world's best-selling authors from the 1930s through to the 1960s. Several of his books were made into Hammer Horror films. He also designed several board games.

Joseph Gluckstein Links was an English writer and art historian. One night over dinner, in 1935, Links suggested to Wheatley that they consider cooperating to produce a murder mystery in the form of a dossier of clues. Links planned the mystery and devised the clues, while Wheatley wrote the text of the included documents.
