Playing Doom since 1992 had a profound effect on me. Case in point: I get really uncomfortable in real life if I'm in a building with obvious rooms over rooms because it feels like alien geometry. I'm also easily impressed by colored lighting and lasers that don't look like sticks. So naturally, guns that shoot glowing bolts with fuzzy halo outlines would be the coolest thing ever, and they are. It's pretty impressive how not having a ranged hitscan weapon changes up how the game is played, honestly.
Also, the X-Spark Cannon might look pretty obscene, but really it's only on par with a low-end rocket launcher from Russian Overkill.
