Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth - Square Enix's Big Miscalculation
In Q1 of 2024, Square Enix released Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, sequel to Final Fantasy 7 Remake and sophomore entry in the Final Fantasy 7 remake trilogy. The game was released to critical acclaim from gaming journalists and consumers alike. However, the game's critical success was not extended to its financial success.
Rebirth's weak sales performance woefully underdelivered and according to multiple sources including IGN, both FF 7 Rebirth and FF 16 cost Square Enix a combined total loss of $140 million dollars. Square Enix then publicly admitted in September of 2024 that the game didn't meet their expectations and that the game was a financial flop.
Avid has covered this topic multiple times last year but has never covered the full game itself until now.
With the release and grand success of AA turn-based RPG Clair Obscur Expedition 33 which has become an industry darling in 2025, Square Enix's investors along with the company itself has acknowledged the game's overwhelming success. The company has expressed interest in making turn-based games again. The developers at Sandfall Interactive have even visited Square Enix's offices as seen in a photo uploaded on X. Earlier in 2025, Square Enix has also announced a complete companywide reboot set to be completed within 3 years.
This sudden shift in behavior only emphasizes just how much of a failure Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth was when it released last year and when it released earlier in 2025 on PC, failing to sell 1 million copies well over a month after it released on Steam and the Epic Games Store.
So where did Square Enix go wrong? Why did this game fail to capture audiences despite its critical success. For the first time, Avid analyzes the full game via the PC version after spending over 170 hours in what could only be described as Square Enix's big miscalculation.
