18 years after Final Fantasy 7's original release, it was the announcement that fans had been hoping for. 18 years' worth of anticipation and excitement was finally released in a wave of happiness.

The best game in the Final Fantasy series – and many people's favourite game ever – was finally going to get the Remake it deserved. It was really happening. Final Fantasy 7 Remake had officially been given the go ahead.

So, here we are three and a bit years later, and what's happened in the intervening time since the PlayStation E3 announcement to sustain that huge level of excitement?

What have fans been told about FF7 Remake news to assure them it'll be worth the 21 year (and counting) wait to play the lovingly remastered release of their favourite game? Well, the answer is...diddly squat.

We basically know nothing more about the project than we did in 2015. With each new Square Enix and PlayStation conference that goes by without any new information, images or footage being released, the disappointment felt by fans becomes a little more profound.

Perhaps the precise reason why there have been precious few meaningful updates of any kind for months about Final Fantasy 7 Remake is because Square Enix knows that any new update would be met with just as much backlash and criticism as it would be met with praise...
