My Final Fantasy VII Journey: The Impact of Midgar

When I was 13 years old, a game was brought to me by my older brother that would profoundly shape my life: Final Fantasy VII. At the time, I was just a kid navigating the chaos of adolescence, but as soon as I picked up the controller and started the game, I was transported to another world—a world that felt as real and alive as my own. Little did I know, the sprawling city of Midgar and its unforgettable characters would leave an indelible mark on me.

From the moment the screen lit up with the iconic opening sequence, I was hooked. The haunting music, the sight of Aerith in the alleyway, and then that zoom-out to reveal the enormous, gritty cityscape of Midgar—it was like nothing I’d ever seen before. As Cloud Strife leapt from the train in the game's opening mission, I felt an instant connection to him. His stoic demeanor, his struggle to find his identity, and his journey from a lone mercenary to someone who finds purpose and camaraderie—it all resonated with me deeply.

Then there was Barret Wallace, whose fiery passion and devotion to protecting his people taught me the importance of standing up for what you believe in. Tifa Lockhart’s quiet strength and unwavering loyalty inspired me to value friendship and resilience. Aerith Gainsborough brought warmth and hope into the dark corners of Midgar, reminding me that even in the bleakest moments, there’s light to be found.

As the story unfolded, I found myself immersed in the Avalanche’s fight against Shinra—the corrupt corporation draining the planet’s life force. Midgar itself felt like a character, its lower slums brimming with life and hardship, its upper plates casting literal shadows on those below. It mirrored the disparities and struggles I was beginning to notice in the real world, sparking my curiosity about the environment, power dynamics, and the importance of community.

One of the moments that stayed with me the most was the fall of Sector 7. The sense of helplessness, the loss, and the determination that followed felt so raw and impactful. It was through these experiences in the game that I began to understand themes of sacrifice, justice, and perseverance.

By the time I reached the end of the Midgar segment, I wasn’t just playing a game—I was living an adventure that made me reflect on my own values and ambitions. It gave me the courage to face my own challenges and the motivation to stand up for the things I believe in. The characters became more than just pixels on a screen; they were mentors, friends, and role models.

And this is just the beginning of the journey. Part 2 of my story will explore what happens as the group leaves Midgar and embarks on a journey across the world. The lessons, the emotions, and the impact of Final Fantasy VII only grow from here, and I can’t wait to share how this story continued to shape my life.
