Final Fantasy VII Remake - Complete Playthrough Part 4/4: Finale
The finale of my FF7 Remake playthrough. Chapters will be below my review.
So! Overall, really enjoyed it. I'll cover what I found to be the lows first, then get on to the good stuff.
Firstly I feel like there is a lot of filler in this game which I didn't much care for. Its the time consuming nature of some of the environments I found a little lazy. You have to do this certain mundane thing to progress to the next area, because the movement when climbing stuff/moving through obstacles is slow, or at least the animation is - it just makes this more frustrating.
Secondly the camera and as an addition the enemy targeting was very tricky to use at some points during combat. Particularly when there are lots of fast moving enemies. Your view keeps flicking around and it can be hard to select 1 particular enemy quickly from up to maybe a dozen or so on the screen. Plus when the right stick is used to move the camera but also change the enemy you are targetting, this just doesn't work at times. They need seperate keybinds.
Alongside other very minor gripes, my last big thing was some of the final scenes in the game, with the whole through the portal and fighting that huge guardian figure. I have never finished the original FF7 but it doesn't happen the same way at least in the Midgar portion. Just felt way too surreal for me, the game is a fantasy game but seems reasonably well grounded and believable up until then. I get the Sephiroth fight, that makes sense given they need to end with some kind of boss and its the villain we know. But not a fan of their choice there with the portal.
Anyway, the highs.
The music is superb, some fantastic versions of the original tracks, for me the nostalgia largely revolves around the music with the original game so was a joy to hear the new versions.
Graphically it looks incredible, I waited to finish this game until it was on PC, for the graphics but also the framerate, well worth the wait. You know its good when you're often just stopping to take in the environments.
Characters, some fantastic voice acting and dialogue. It really brought the characters to life and expanded on their personalities from the original. Plus the random NPCs and all their dialogue, really adds to the atmosphere as you're walking through an environment.
Combat is just great, the Materia system is still as fantastic as it was back in the original. The weapon levelling, weapon variety, armor or accessories whatever they were called, abilities, ATB bar, limits, switching between characters. Loved it all. I did find I was overwhelmed at times during combat as there could be too much happening on screen to keep track of, but that would improve with experience I'm sure.
So overall I think they did an amazing job with this game, I'm hooked now. I'll be playing through the final 2 games in the trilogy for sure, but more importantly its made me want to go back and finally finish the original FF7! Which has been on my list of games to complete for around 20 years. For whatever reason I never did finish it but now is the time, need to know what happens. (The farthest I got was I believe around half way)
So that playthrough will be up hopefully not long after this one. Will feel great to finally say I've finished that game.
Also on a side note its been a lot of fun watching Maximillian Dood's playthough of Remake alongside my own. His passion for the original and now the Remake rubbed off on me and really got me into it.
