Final Fantasy has always had its roots in turn-based combat, and there have been numerous iterations of this over the years... from the ATB system (Final Fantasy IV), the CTB system (Final Fantasy X), through to the ADB system (Final Fantasy XII).
But as the years have progressed, the gameplay has become more and more action-oriented and Final Fantasy 15 really pushed this further with the AXB System. We also know that the Final Fantasy 7 Remake gameplay will be much more action focussed and it seems like that's the future of the franchise, as Yoshinori Kitase has now said there won't be a return to modern turn-based combat.
