The Milvus Velocycle is a nasty opponent, sure, but he's nothing compared to what comes next. A little patience, and this fight is relatively easy. Take out the weaker enemies first so they aren't helping out their mechanized pal, and make sure you heal as needed.

The Aster Protoflorian on the other hand... this guy is TOUGH. The gimmick in this battle is that he continuously changes elements. This is easy enough when you have all the elements at your disposal, but Hope is limited to Fire and Blizzard, while Lightning only has Thunder. Apropos. Add to that the Protoflorian hits hard with wide area attacks, can almost oneshot Hope with his strongest bangle, and has the most HP of anything we've seen yet and you get a LOOOOONG battle.

Protect is basically the only thing keeping you alive in this battle. If you lose Protect, the Aster Protoflorian will wipe you out in seconds. Try to separate Hope and Lightning by timing Lightning's Commando Attacks so that she hops away from Hope. After that first one, if you have her attack the Protoflorian while it's really close to Hope, you can bounce Lightning even further away. If you time it off by a split second, she will be standing about one foot from Hope, and both characters get massive damage from the area attacks.

Never use Lightning as a Ravager when the Protoflorian has Exoproofing Lightning on. This will make any of Light's attacks get absorbed. Not nullified: absorbed. That's not worth the stagger increase when you're dealing barely 100 HP at a time. When you see Exoproofing Water, though, Lightning should attempt to stay as a Ravager as much as possible without losing the Chain Gauge. I think it was the third Exoproofing Water in which I unleashed Lightning's wild card: Odin. He helps deal a ton of damage with his Thunder-based attacks, so take advantage of that at the best possible time: hopefully when the Protoflorian is almost staggered.

After Odin leaves, you are extremely vulnerable until Hope gets Protect on you as it resets your buffs. This is where I died a couple times. It puts both of you next to each other, and the Protoflorian starts hitting faster and faster. If you don't get Protect on and fast, there's no hope for the rest of the battle. It will also help to try to get Lightning away from Hope, but that depends on how much HP you have left, and a bit of luck.

The Aster Protoflorian took me 50 minutes and 4 failures, mostly due to bad luck (once due to stupidity). This is a tricky fight, but as my guide says, it's certainly not the hardest. Yay?

I'm doing a challenge run of FF13. Hopefully I will be able to complete it, but I've never done a challenge run before, so no promises.

SRC stands for Secondary Role Challenge. The guide I am using can be found on GameFAQs: http://www.gamefaqs.com/ps3/928790-final-fantasy-xiii/faqs/62259

NCU stands for No Chrystarium Usage. The guide I am using can be found on GameFAQs: http://www.gamefaqs.com/ps3/928790-final-fantasy-xiii/faqs/59596

The SRC run begins identical to NCU in that you cannot touch your Chrystarium for the first half of the game. Once the secondary roles are unlocked, one may ONLY use or upgrade those roles.
