I'm late to the party once again but..Even last few times I went to the Minion Square to play this it was empty...Anyhow Lord of Verminion is the new mini game in the Gold Saucer. It's an RTS that uses the minions you can acquire. The goal is to break all of the opponent's Arcana Stones while protecting your own.

There is a bit of strategy to it with regards to minion types as well:
Monsters are strong against critters.
Critters are strong against poppets.
Poppets are strong against monsters.
Gadget-type minions are neither strong nor weak against any type.

Now as for my thoughts on it? It's..eh. At least Square tried to experiment with something new. Although I would have preferred a turn based ATB style thing this wasn't necessarily a bad choice.It just really isn't as fast paced as Triple Triad. It's not too difficult either, barring some challenges that involve bosses. Sadly most minions aren't even great for it, not even my prized Baby Opo-opo. It's probably more fun to win with your favorites but harder. Here I just went with the typical Kidragora army. They are amazingly effective for a great deal of challenges.

The most recent patch did at least fix the stupid time limit on the tutorial too. Now if only they gave you MGP for cleared challenges since it's hard to find other players for this game. It's a shame since it's probably much more interesting when playing against players.

I also hope the tourneys don't become as stupid as Triple Triad tourneys became..you know, people just beating on themselves or paying for wins or owning weak NPCs, it was just pathetic and had no thought put into it.

I just wish Square would actually put some money back into FFXIV instead of pouring the money this game makes into other titles. It'd really help the game at this point.
