Genre: Side-scrolling beat-'em-up
Description:
"Final Fight" is a side-scrolling beat-'em-up video game produced by Capcom. Originally released as an arcade game in 1989, it was the seventh title released for the CP System hardware. The game is set in the fictional Metro City and allows players to control one of three street fighters: Mike Haggar, a former pro wrestler and now city mayor; Cody Travers, an expert brawler; and Guy, a modern-day ninja. The trio embarks on a mission to rescue Jessica, Haggar's daughter and Cody's girlfriend, after she is kidnapped by the Mad Gear Gang.
Interestingly, the game began its development as a sequel to the original "Street Fighter" released in 1987, under the working title "Street Fighter '89." However, its genre was shifted from a fighting game to a beat 'em up, and the title was changed to "Final Fight" after the success of "Double Dragon."
"Final Fight" was a major commercial success in arcades, selling 30,000 arcade units globally. It became the highest-grossing arcade game of 1990 in Japan and the top-grossing arcade conversion kit in the United States for that year. The game also led to the creation of the "Final Fight" series, which saw several sequels. Some characters from "Final Fight" later appeared as playable fighters in other entries of the "Street Fighter" franchise, such as the "Street Fighter Alpha" sub-series.
Gameplay:
Players can choose between the three main characters: Haggar, Cody, and Guy, each having their unique fighting style. The game can be played by up to two players simultaneously. The controls consist of an eight-way joystick and two buttons for attacking and jumping. Players can perform combos, jump attacks, special attacks, and grab enemies. The game comprises six stages or "rounds," with each round set in a different section of Metro City. At the end of each round, players face a unique boss character.
Plot:
The game's narrative is set in Metro City, a fictional city on the Atlantic coast of the United States. In the 1990s, the city's crime rate surged, but the election of Mike Haggar as mayor led to significant improvements. However, the dominant criminal organization, the Mad Gear Gang, wasn't ready to back down. They kidnapped Haggar's daughter, Jessica, leading Haggar, Cody, and Guy to take matters into their own hands and embark on a mission to rescue her.
Development:
The game was designed by Akira Nishitani and produced by Yoshiki Okamoto. Initially, it was showcased under the title "Street Fighter '89." The title was later changed to "Final Fight" after feedback from operators. The game's soundtrack was composed by a team of seven sound composers.
Legacy:
"Final Fight" was followed by several sequels, and the total sales of the series have reached 3.2 million units for home systems. The game's success and influence can be seen in its lasting legacy and the numerous ports and re-releases it has seen over the years.
