Doom 3 is a "reboot" of the series and retells the events of the first Doom in a new way, ignoring events of the previous games in the series. It takes place on Mars in the 22nd century in the laboratory complex of the United Aerospace Corporation (UAC). UAC scientists have opened a portal to hell, and the complex is overrun with demons. The player controls an unnamed marine, a new character who is not identical to Doomguy from other games in the series. This hero must survive, deal with the invasion, and prevent the demons from reaching Earth. Unlike previous games in the series, Doom 3 features friendly non-player characters who can communicate with the protagonist, give him hints and valuable items. Doom 3 contains multiple horror elements that bring the game closer to the survival horror genre: many levels of the game take place in the dark, the player cannot see the enemies and must use a flashlight to understand where they are - this encourages the player to progress slowly and carefully.
