"Scrapped Snow Story.
Project Cancellation
Now do not worry, this just means this sub project with the snow level has been canceled. The prologue and main game are still in production.
WHY IS IT CANCELED
Due to technical difficulties, it is not possible to continue development of this game. The system this game is being developed on cannot handle a large sandbox scene, so Unity constantly lags, freezes, and crashes. It has gotten to the point where play mode cannot be entered without crashing, so any testing requires a full build which takes about 10-15 minutes. At the rate it takes to make small changes, it would take another month or 2 to get the game to where it should be. Time is not eternal and focus must be shifted back to the main game. It is a pretty bad excuse, but it is the truth and I apologize to everyone that was really looking forward to the snow level.
THE GOOD-
1. By doing this, it has become clear that any kind of level like this cannot be done. So better to learn that now on a side project than encounter it halfway through the main game. This should not be a problem in developing the main game as all the scenes are much more contained and smaller.
2. If you REALLY wanna play the snow level, well... you can still! What is done is available for download, but be aware that it is kind of buggy, and no where near the level of polish envisioned(lots of missing/misplaced geometry, colliders, textures,wonky navigation) and very unbalanced.
There is always the possibly of returning to this at a later point when an appropriate system for game development has been obtained.
What Happened?
Development of this little snow level started in late December. It was planned on being released at the end of January, but somehow development went down the rabbit hole and about 3 weeks were spent(wasted?) learning about editor scripting and unit testing. Valuable tools that could come in great handy in the future (even if a bunch of code was torn apart(some of which has not been put back together yet) to refactor with these new found abilities). However they don't help a lot in getting the actual game done. So things were pushed back to the end of February... and that is when it began. The scene got more and more filled with things and Unity just cannot handle it on the current system it is being used on... and this is where we are now... Some time has been lost, but many lessons have been learned through the ordeal.
